Aim:Lack of sleep whilst in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) can have a major long term negative impact on a patient’s recovery from ill health. We, as nurses, can implement significant changes within ICU to improve the sleep experience for our patients.
Sleep deprivation is a major precipitating factor for the development of delirium. Delirium is an underdiagnosed and undertreated condition within ICU and has a huge impact on long term morbidity and mortality of patients.
Any intervention employed to reduce delirium can only have a positive effect for a patients immediate and long term recovery from serious illness.
